Turtle Talk:
Patience rewards.... This performance includes some remarkably brilliant instrumental
sounds. "Remarkably brilliant" when you remember that it was recorded
acoustically in front of a recording horn, not electrically in front of a microphone.
However, Turtle almost discontinued the session when unable to preserve that
brilliance. When continuous noise reduction was applied to reduce surface noise,
the brilliance disappeared. Too much continuous noise reduction will do that.
Turtle put the performance aside for a couple days then tried again. Patience
rewards! The surface noise you will hear in the beginning of the performance
fades after about 50 seconds and the wonderful brilliance of the brass and woodwind
instruments is preserved.
Tech Tidbits:
Edison Diamond Disc 51252-R was
transferred using a 3.7 mil full conical radius stylus in a Stanton 500 cartridge
at 80 rpm. Turtle used Cool Edit and DC-ART 32 software to reduce noise.
